Bean Throwing Ceremony/Setsubun
Hey, everyone. Long time no see^^
We have the ceremony today. It is Setsubun. Setsubun literally means “the day between two seasons”. People celebrate Setsubun on either the 3rd or 4th of February, the day before the first spring day on the present calendar.
Bean throwing called mamemaki is done at home on the night of Setsubun. People scatter roasted soy beans inside and outside their houses shouting, “Fortune in, devils out”. Then they eat the same number of beans as their age and wish for good health. Bean is “mame” in Japanese which means good health.
Eating “Ehou-maki” is another special traditional event which has become popular recently. ”Ehou-maki” is a sushi roll made from rice, cucumber, shiitake mushroom, eel and so on. They say if you eat it facing the happy direction while keeping quiet, you will become happy.
Do you have the same ceremony in your country?
